on sonnets

night sky,aurora

centuries have come, and eras have passed
refining verse to fit this honored form
Milton, Shakespeare, no one has surpassed
the sonnet they both made the foremost norm

how many poets languished at the task
sculpting words to meet both rhythm and rhyme
they wondered at the questions they should ask
and tapped their toes to keep a perfect time

some of these persist in classic volume
quoted by a growing list of players
others we can give our thanks succumb
owing to a myriad naysayers

poetry is often hid in layers
for us to find on pages yet to come
